Lizzo, a plus-size singer, is known for her powerful voice and her advocacy for body positivity. Recently, she responded to a TikTok video where the creator, @tiffriahgrande, questioned if plus-size people work out for health or to lose weight. Lizzo agreed with this perspective and shared her own thoughts.
On May 15th, Lizzo posted a video in response to the TikTok creator’s question. In her video, she began by saying, “Heavy on the not trying to escape fatness.” As a singer and performer, Lizzo often engages in activities that require physical stamina, like dancing and singing in tight clothes that can make breathing more difficult.
She explained that as her career progressed, she became more aware of her body’s health. In 2020, Lizzo started eating vegan and exercising regularly. She shared that this was not about losing weight, but about improving her overall health. “I think a lot of people see a fat person that way and immediately just assume everything they’re doing is to be thin,” Lizzo said. “I’m not trying to be thin. I don’t ever want to be thin.”
For Lizzo, the focus isn’t on losing weight but on maintaining a healthy mindset. She explained that exercise has helped her feel better mentally. “Exercise has helped me shift my mind, not my body.” She believes that if the mind is unhappy, the body will also be unhappy.
Lizzo has always embraced her body type and works to normalize diverse body shapes and sizes. Her stance goes beyond just promoting her body as a trend; she wants to encourage everyone to celebrate their own bodies.
Lizzo’s approach to health is about mental well-being and happiness. She values how exercise makes her feel, boosting her mood and overall happiness. Her message is clear: health is not about fitting into society’s standards, but about feeling good in your own skin.
