Detroit rapper sues Lyft after driver allegedly told her she ‘wouldn’t fit’ in his car

A Detroit rapper, Dajua Blanding, who goes by the stage name Dank Demoss, is taking legal action against Lyft. She claims that one of their drivers refused to give her a ride because of her size. Blanding filed a lawsuit against both Lyft and the driver, identified as John Doe, in Michigan’s Circuit Court for Wayne County on January 27.

According to the court documents, the incident happened on January 18. Blanding ordered a Lyft ride to her cousin’s house to watch a football game. Around 10 to 15 minutes later, the driver arrived at her location. However, when she approached the vehicle, the driver allegedly locked the doors and tried to drive away.

As Blanding walked toward the car, she was shocked when the driver locked the doors and attempted to leave. She even captured part of the exchange on video, where she can be heard saying, “I can fit in this car.” The driver responded, “Believe me, you can’t.”

Blanding says she confronted the driver, asking why he was leaving. The driver allegedly told her that she was “too big” to ride in his car. He also claimed that her weight would damage his tires. Despite her insistence that she didn’t need a bigger car, the driver stood by his decision. He explained that he had faced this issue before and said “overweight individuals must order Lyft XLs.”

After canceling the ride, the driver left, leaving Blanding stranded. She was unable to attend the party at her cousin’s house. “I’ve been in cars smaller than that,” Blanding said in an interview. “I just want them to know that it hurt my feelings.”

The lawsuit accuses Lyft and the driver of discrimination. Blanding’s attorney, John Marko, called the incident illegal, saying refusing someone based on weight is as wrong as refusing service due to race or religion. Blanding is suing for damages, including emotional distress, as well as compensation for legal costs. Lyft has since condemned discrimination and said their guidelines explicitly prohibit such behavior.
