The 95-year-old actress, who was retired but starred in The Blues Brothers (1980), The 10 Commandments (1956) and Lady Sings the Blues (1972), was found in her Altadena home, located in northeast Los Angeles, on Sunday at 6pm.
She had been reported missing by her family when they couldn’t find her at a designated evacuation site.
The last sighting of the celebrated actress happened on Tuesday, with the onset of the Eaton Fire.
Her granddaughter, Dalyce Kelley, confirmed through an emotional Facebook post Sunday evening that the grim search had concluded with the discovery of her grandmother’s body in her house.
She expressed her grief: “With a heavy heart, I share that our search for Momma D has come to an end, as her remains were found in her home.”
Lamenting the loss, Kelley described the immense void left behind: “We are devastated, and it’s difficult to comprehend how her life came to this end..”
Reflecting on Curry’s significant life impact, she continued: “She radiated positivity, showed grace, and lived as a shining example of strength, resilience, and kindness.
“Her story is one of breaking barriers, overcoming challenges, and spreading love wherever she went.”
Kelley spoke of personal regrets but focused on celebrating her grandmother’s legacy: “I miss her deeply and am working through the waves of regret-wishing I had called her more, shared more moments.
“But I know the best way to honor her is to keep her memory alive and cherish the beautiful moments we shared.”
