The Truth Behind Angie Stone’s Tragic Passing and Her Fight Against UMG

The music industry was rocked by the tragic news of Angie Stone’s passing in a car accident at the age of 63. The legendary singer was traveling in a Sprinter van when it reportedly flipped over and was hit by a truck.

Strangely, out of everyone in the vehicle, Angie was the only one who lost her life, sparking questions and suspicions about the circumstances of her death.

Angie Stone was a pioneer in both hip-hop and neo-soul, contributing immensely to the music industry. She was a member of The Sequence, the first female rap group to achieve a gold plaque for their hit Funky You Up. The song was later sampled by Dr. Dre and interpolated by Bruno Mars and Mark Ronson for Uptown Funk, but Angie and her group never received proper royalties or credit.

Angie Stone’s Fight Against UMG

Before her passing, Angie was preparing to take legal action against Universal Music Group (UMG) for allegedly withholding her royalties. In a shocking revelation, she exposed how UMG had been collecting her earnings without paying her a dime.

She openly called out the industry, saying:
“A lot of my publishing, my royalties, my mechanicals… they have all pretty much been stolen. Where are my royalties going? I’m not getting them. Universal Music has been receiving all my royalties, and they have taken all the money due to me.”

Angie also stated that the people she trusted—her managers, agents, and lawyers—had failed to protect her financial interests, allowing major labels to exploit her hard work. She expressed frustration over seeing other artists get rich off her music while she struggled to receive what was rightfully hers.

In a chilling moment, Angie hinted at potential dangers that could arise from exposing these industry wrongdoings, saying:
“I don’t know what they might do to keep from paying me all the money they owe me.”

Many fans and industry insiders now question whether Angie’s tragic accident was merely a coincidence or if something more sinister was at play.

A Legacy of Influence in the Music Industry

Angie’s contributions to the industry were immense. After her early years in hip-hop, she transitioned to R&B and neo-soul, forming groups like Mantronix and Vertical Hold. She went on to release 11 studio albums, featuring timeless hits like I Wish I Didn’t Miss YouNo More Rain, and Brother.

Her influence extended beyond her own music. Angie was instrumental in shaping the careers of some of the biggest names in R&B and neo-soul. She helped craft D’Angelo’s groundbreaking albums Brown Sugar and Voodoo, projects that defined the neo-soul movement. In fact, Maxwell’s team initially reached out to Angie to help him develop a similar sound. However, she turned it down out of loyalty to D’Angelo, whom she was dating at the time.

Additionally, Angie played a key role in launching the careers of Erykah Badu and Lyfe Jennings. She even helped Mariah Carey get signed by advising a record executive to take her talent to a major label instead of an independent one.

Betrayal, Industry Politics, and Jealousy

Despite her immense talent and contributions, Angie faced numerous betrayals and setbacks in her career.

One of the biggest blows came from her relationship with D’Angelo. While she played a major role in his rise to fame, industry insiders reportedly worked to sabotage their relationship. Angie later revealed that certain people were assigned to make her look bad and blame her for D’Angelo’s exposure to alcohol and drugs.

“They were sending out letters everywhere to make people think I was the cause of him being exposed to alcohol and drugs. It was all fabricated. Someone was assigned to destroy my credibility.”

This sabotage didn’t just affect her personal life—it impacted her career as well. At one point, Angie was supposed to work on Maxwell’s debut album, but she declined out of loyalty to D’Angelo. Ironically, Maxwell’s career flourished, while Angie’s industry standing suffered.

She also revealed that Mary J. Blige took two of the songs she had written with D’Angelo (Everyday and Die, later renamed Paradise) and released them without permission. Despite her frustrations, Angie remained professional and didn’t retaliate.

R&B Divas and Reality TV Controversy

In addition to her music career, Angie ventured into acting and reality TV. She starred in movies like The Hot Chick and Fighting Temptations, alongside Beyoncé and Cuba Gooding Jr. However, her experience with reality TV was far from pleasant.

During her time on R&B Divas, Angie discovered that her fiancé, Ashanti Graves, was cheating on her with one of the show’s producers. She eventually left the show due to the toxic environment.

“The people running the show were so messy. Someone in the production team was dating my then-fiancé. I found out through text messages meant for him but sent to me by mistake.”

Weight Discrimination and Career Obstacles

Angie also faced discrimination due to her weight. She was devastated to learn that Clive Davis had prevented her from appearing on Oprah Winfrey’s Neo-Soul Special because of her size.

“I was the only artist not on there. My manager later told me that Clive wouldn’t let me go because he thought I was too big.”

Additionally, Alicia Keys allegedly took the name of Angie’s album, Diary of a Soul Sister, and rebranded it as Diary of Alicia Keys. Feeling disrespected and pushed out, Angie asked to be released from her record deal.

Angie’s Final Days and Spiritual Battles

In the months leading up to her passing, Angie spoke about facing spiritual attacks. She had recently battled a severe blood infection that nearly took her life.

“I knew it was a spiritual attack. But I prayed, and God healed me.”

Despite her struggles, Angie continued to work on new music and fight for her royalties. Now, many hope that her children will continue her battle to reclaim the money she was owed.

Was Angie Stone Silenced?

Angie’s death has raised eyebrows, especially given her recent legal battles with UMG. The fact that she was the only person in the vehicle who passed away has led many to believe that foul play may have been involved.

Her words—“I don’t know what they might do to keep from paying me all the money they owe me.”—now seem eerily prophetic.

Regardless of what really happened, Angie Stone’s legacy will continue to inspire generations of musicians. From hip-hop to neo-soul, her impact on the music industry is undeniable.

Rest in peace, Angie Stone. You deserved better.
