Colombian mom of 20 says baby-making a ‘profitable’ business

A Colombian mother, who has recently welcomed her 20th child, asserts that she has transformed motherhood into a “profitable” venture. This mother, who depends on the generosity of her community and government support, expresses her intention to expand her family until her “body can no longer accommodate it.”

Life in Martha’s household is anything but serene. The 40-year-old resides in a three-bedroom home in Medellín, Colombia, where her 20 children share cramped living spaces, with the eldest occupying the couch.Reports indicate that the monthly living expenses for a family of four are approximately $2,200 US. Given the size of her family, Martha requires around $11,000 each month to support her household, excluding additional costs.

In an interview with the Sun, she acknowledged the challenges she faces, admitting that she sometimes “struggles to provide sufficient meals for everyone on a limited budget.” Despite these financial hurdles, the resourceful mother finds motivation in the government aid she receives, which encourages her to continue expanding her family.

“The reality is, the government provides assistance for each child, and I receive a small amount for each one,” she shared with the Daily Mail in January 2024, while still expecting her 20th child. Martha, who has 17 children under the age of 18, noted that the older children contribute about $76 each, while the younger ones yield approximately $30.50.

In total, the government support amounts to less than $600 US per month. “I view motherhood as a business, essentially,” Martha stated, explaining that as her older children leave home, she feels compelled to have more children to secure additional financial assistance.

Furthermore, she receives support from her local church and neighbors, as the 20 fathers of her children are absent and, in her words, “irresponsible.”

Martha, who admitted she is unaware of the identity of her youngest child’s father, declared her intention to continue having “children until my body can no longer handle it.” This unconventional perspective on motherhood has ignited considerable discussion.
